Abstract

Due to increased number of vehicles on the roads, various problems have appeared on roads including heavy traffic jam and accidents. These problems not only waste a lot of time, but sometimes put the lives of peoples at risk. This can be avoided by disseminating information about such situations on roads. The proposed mechanism sends information about traffic incidents and congestion to the infrastructure and the vehicles connected to any of infrastructure receives the updated information. This paper proposes a crowdsource based approach to detect traffic congestion and accidents intelligently and then disseminate the updated the information to infrastructure. For creating real-time information on roads the proposed scheme exchanges information with other vehicles via infrastructure. An intelligent Algorithm has been developed that can detect road traffic congestion and accidents based on vehicle location (GPS values) and smartphone accelerometer values. In this research paper, we have focused on the efficiency and reliability of using smartphones for incident warning and traffic congestion detection.
