Abstract

In this study, synthesis of composites based on methyl methacrylate (MMA)-asphaltenes matrix was investigated with different amounts of Arabian heavy asphaltenes. The in situ polymerization technique was used with dispersion of the asphaltene molecules into the MMA monomer mixture. Thermal degradation characteristics of the composites formed were measured with TGA and glass transition temperature was measured with DSC. In addition, the viscoelastic properties of the composites were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that the thermal stability and viscoelastic properties of the MMA composites formed were significantly improved with the addition of asphaltene as filler.
