Abstract
Attempts have been made by several researchers to improve the performance of sisal-fibre concrete, including coating of fibres, sealing of the concrete pore system and use of admixtures for reducing concrete pore water alkalinity. Results obtained thus far have been not very encouraging. This paper presents, amongst others, the technique of impregnating sisal-fibre concrete with plasticized sulphur, rendering the concrete pore system effectively sealed. Results are presented to show the effectiveness of the sulphur treatment and other treatments in protecting the fibre from deterioration.
