Abstract

The objective of this paper is to assess the use of indigenous stone as a building material in the Southern Province of Saudi Arabia. This assessment includes stone preparation, stone classification, properties of stone as a building material, and practical use of stone in the building construction in the southern province of Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, a survey was conducted on a randomly selected samples of inhabitants of the area. The results of the survey showed that 25% of the samples are living in stone buildings, 20% desired to use stone to build new houses in future, 60% do not desire to use stone facing, and all the respondents stated that they feel that stone buildings are found to provide them with more indoor climatic comfort that the other types of building.
