Abstract

The three chalcones namely (E)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-N-phenylacrylamide (INH-1), (E)-3-(4dimethylamino)phenyl)-N-phenylacrylamide (INH-2) and (E) -3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-N-phenylacrylamide (INH-3) were synthesized and their corrosion inhibition properties on mild steel in 1M HCl was investigated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization method, linear polarization resistance (LPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Potentiodynamic results showed that, chalcones are act as mixed type inhibitors and adsorption of these compounds follow Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Nyquist plots indicates that the addition of chalcones increases the charge-transfer resistance (Rct) and decreases the double-layer capacitance (Cdl) of the corrosion process this reveals that investigated chalcones inhibits mild steel corrosion by adsorption on its surface. Some thermodynamic and kinetic parameters also determined in relevance to describe the mechanism of adsorption.
