Abstract

A theoretical analysis of combined forced and free convection heat transfer for turbulent flow is presented, with emphasis given to supercritical fluids. Free convection and other effects caused by the large property variations associated with heat transfer to supercritical fluids are accounted for in this surface renewal based formulation. Based on this analysis, the buoyancy force has been found to cause a deterioration in the heat transfer for up flow. This phenomenon is characterized by large increases in the mean periodicity of turbulence within the wall region. In addition to appropriately handling the effects of free convection for vertical force convection of supercritical fluids, this analysis is also applicable to fluids with moderately varying properties.
