Abstract
This chapter examines the thermal performance, energy efficiency, sustainability, challenges, and future research directions of hemp clay walls in the context of sustainable building practices. Hemp clay walls, composed of hemp fibers, clay, and other natural additives, offer excellent thermal insulation, moisture regulation, and environmental sustainability. They contribute to energy savings, carbon sequestration, and circular economy principles by utilizing renewable resources and promoting material recyclability and biodegradability. However, several challenges, including technical limitations, regulatory barriers, economic considerations, and market acceptance, hinder their widespread adoption. Future research directions focus on advancing material development, testing and simulation techniques, standardization, sustainable integration, and education and outreach efforts to overcome these challenges and expand the use of hemp clay walls in sustainable construction.
