Abstract
The exponential growth of global data traffic, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services, has resulted in an unparalleled surge in data center energy consumption. This study offers a comprehensive examination of the international energy dynamics in data centers, with regard to geographic growth patterns, demand, and energy contributions from hyperscale players. It discusses energy demand growth, projected to hit 1,479 TWh in 2030, while emphasizing pressing areas such as grid strain, greenhouse gas emissions, e-waste, and disputes over regulation. On the other hand, it delves into areas with promising potential in energy efficiency, renewable energy, grid engagement, and demand response. Using information from company records, literature, and policy briefs, it seeks to illuminate areas in which data center energy dynamics could align with such growth in relation to information growth. The findings highlight the importance of implementing cross-cutting technological, legislative, and operational solutions to ensure that data center expansion supports, not undermines, global climate and energy transition goals.
