Abstract

Volta invented the voltaic pile, consisting of alternating zinc and copper discs separated by layers soaked in saltwater. Although it was groundbreaking, this battery was not rechargeable. The first rechargeable battery, introduced in 1859, was the lead-acid battery, which utilizes lead and lead oxide plates submerged in sulfuric acid to facilitate electrochemical conversion and produce electrical energy. This chemistry is low cost, and even though lead is environmentally damaging, lead-acid batteries are still in use today.
