Abstract
Identification and relative importance of design defects affecting maintenance of buildings are discussed. Opinion and recommendations of contractors, designers and owners regarding improvement in building maintenance are also discussed. Owners and contractors specify inadequate structural desigh as most significant design defects. Designers specify hiring of unqualified designers as most significant cause of defects in design. Proper access to maintenance equipment, proper exterior finishes, qualified designers, and detailed construction drawings are recommended to improve building maintenance.
