Abstract

A nitrone-based entry into the tropane class of alkaloids is described. Syntheses of pseudotropinc and dl-cocaine are discussed. The synthetic utility and the high degree of regiochemical and stereochemical control inherent in the nitrone cycloadditions are stressed.
