Abstract
Continual consumption of fossil fuels escalated thoughtful issues of energy security, supply, and excessive increments in global warming. Synthesis gas is one of the potent energy alternatives to generate transport fuels, chemicals, and energy products. Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the gigantic feedstocks having potential to produce syngas. Gasification of agricultural and forestry residue-based biomass generates potentially syngas. The present chapter provides in-depth state-of-the-art reviews on current research and technology used for the production of syngas from different feedstocks and comparison of their productivity based on technology adapted. A brief introduction was covered to highlight the importance of syngas production using biomass as an alternate biofuel for ensuring the sustainable future and its market status by comparison with other energy sources. Different types of reactors such as fixed-bed, fluidized-bed, and dual fluidized-bed gasifiers were employed based on feedstock characteristics. Fundamental characteristics of feedstocks required to enhance the productivity of syngas were also covered. It also describes and highlights the benefits of considering biomass as soul renewable feedstocks for the generation of syngas. Various gasification processes were described with in-depth detail of different types of gasifiers utilized for syngas generation using biomass as a reliable feedstock. In addition to this a section to emphasize the process intensification approaches, and the role of highly reactive gasification media was summarized. The last section of the chapter highlights the importance and application of syngas in different sectors with the challenges and opportunities. In the overall summary, this chapter briefly covers the aspects related to syngas production from biomass gasification comprising technical information with extensive illustration, comparison tables, and up-to-date references related to biofuel and bioenergy.
