Abstract
Industrial ecology (IE) aims to change the industrial system so that its inputs and outputs are in line with global and local carrying capacities. Moving from a linear to a closed-loop system in all spheres of production and consumption is a key objective of IE. The dynamics of the industrial world can resemble an ecological model in different ways. Industrial ecosystems represent a practical method for creating closed-loop systems regionally, locally, or in industrial parks. There are working examples available, and fresh initiatives are in the works. These ideas and initiatives illustrate important steps on the road to sustainable development.
