Abstract
This paper presents a survey of major Disease Outbreak Notification Systems (DONS) and a taxonomy for such systems based on specific criteria. The entire effort is part of the design process for the planned deployment of a similar system for Saudi Arabia. The main function of DONS is to warn for potential outbreaks. The taxonomy outlines complete and partial DONS implementation across North America, Europe and Australia and makes a significant contribution in identifying the major features and technical parameters for the proposed system.
