Abstract

The surface rejuvenation model is used to develop inner laws for fully turbulent boundary layer flow with adverse and favorable pressure gradients. This general form of the surface renewal model is found to provide a viable alternative means of representing the mean hydrodynamic characteristics within the wall region for turbulent boundary layer flows with nonuniform free-stream velocity. Calculations for u** plus obtained by this method and the damping factor method are essentially equivalent and are in good agreement with experimental data. In addition, the frequencies s** plus and omega ** plus associated with these two approaches are in basic agreement with experimental data reported for mean burst frequency for P** plus approximately equals 0. Whereas serious limitations in the damping factor approach occur in application involving heat and mass transfer, the surface rejuvenation model provides a direct basis for generalization without the need of additional empirical inputs such as turbulent Prandtl number.
