Abstract

It is demonstrated that surface coatings may produce cheaper metal working tools with enhanced performance. The most attractive processes for this purpose are C.V.D. and ion plating. Work on the development of titanium nitride coatings produced by chemical ion plating is described and their use in metal forming using a plane strain compression test demonstrates their effectivenss.
