Abstract

Sulfide scavengers are specialized chemicals that are widely employed in oil and gas industries in the removal of soluble sulfide species. An ideal scavenger is expected to cause neither corrosion nor fouling issues. In real time, the scavenger or its reaction products can have corrosion inducing or inhibitive properties. A scavenger may synergistically or antagonistically affect the performance of a commercial corrosion inhibitor. The chapter starts with a brief account of the sulfur-containing compounds in crude oil and natural gas, followed by a short description of the type and the nature of the reported scavengers. Later, the scavenger's roles in induction or inhibition of corrosion/fouling are presented. Potential interference of scavengers with other chemical additives are also discussed.
