Abstract
A new binary accelerator system in sulfur vulcanization of natural rubber was investigated. The effect of dithiobiuret (DTB) as a secondary accelerator was compared with that of thiourea in the binary combinations where thiourea was taken as control. Dynamic mechanical measurement is used to estimate the entanglement density of the rubber vulcanizates. The modulus of the rubbery plateau was a direct measurement of the entanglement density. It was observed that the plateau modulus in the rubbery region is higher for samples cured with DTB. The tensile and other physical properties of the vulcanizates were better than or comparable to those of the reference mix. It was observed that cure reaction becomes faster and easier upon the use of DTB. It was observed that the performance of DTB cured vulcanizates is excellent on the basis of mechanical properties.
