Abstract

The numbers of refugees and displaced people are growing and need housing solutions that are safe, of low-cost and simple to construct. Several researchers have worked on designing such shelters but none of them has tested their structural performance. The current study involves using readily available low-cost Casuarina wood in the design of a low-cost portable house. The design of the wooden members and their connections is performed. A full-scale model of the structure is tested. Finally, a cost-analysis study is performed to compare the cost effectiveness of the designed system to existing systems available in the market. The structure withstood loads higher than its design loads.
