Abstract

Formal grammars have been used extensively in the analysis and design of computer languages and compilers. This paper gives an overview of the application of formal grammars to RNA. It starts with a brief introduction to different forms of formal grammar and stochastic grammars. Then, it shows how stochastic grammars can be applied to biological sequences, and gave an example on the application of context-free grammars to represent RNA sequences. Finally, it presents the conclusion.
