Abstract
Static excitation systems supplemented by various stabilizing signals derived from frequency, rate of change of frequency, rate of change of voltage and field current are now in service for the bulb turbine-generators at Jenpeg power station. The dynamic stability of the Jenpeg units as influenced by the manufacturer designed stabilizing signals is analyzed. The effect of varying the regulating coefficients of the different stabilizing circuits on the machine stability is investigated using eigenvalues techniques. Comparison is made with results obtained from a detailed non-linear model simulation. As an alternative to the manufacturer supplied stabilizing signals, power stabilizers are considered. It is shown that a power stabilizer provides improved performance comparable to the stabilizing signals currently used for the Jenpeg bulb turbine-generators.
