Abstract
Transmission measurements were performed on expensive and non- expensive coating filters used to reduce harmful ultraviolet and infrared sunrays penetration through car windows or through the eyes. Heat reduction claims made by the manufacturers of one such filter were studied keeping in mind the possible incidence of such reduction on oil consumption, the world environment and on somewhat slowing down the extravagant world use of this non-renewable form of energy that is fossil fuel. The expensive coating filter exhibited interesting properties that could have a positive incidence on the reduction of oil consumption for air conditioning inside cars. We also investigated expensive and very cheap sun glasses amongst what is widely used in Saudi Arabia. We found out that the expensive glasses provided good coverage against ultraviolet radiation while the cheap one not only lacked that property, but it even facilitated ultraviolet penetration into the eyes by a combination of reduction of the visible transmission and allowance for important UV transmission.
