Solar and Wind Power in Enhancing Unconventional Oil Recovery by Underground Heat Induction

Abstract

Since the discovery of oil, a lot of research has been conducted in enhancing the oil recovery process. One of the promising techniques is the unconventional oil heat induction recovery method, in which the hydrocarbon deposits like oil shale are heated under the ground before extraction. This method can be even of more beneficial and more environmentally friendly if renewable energy resources are used as the main source of electricity that is used for heating. If so, not only CO2 emissions could be reduced, but a storage system for electrical energy can be synthesized, which may help in solving the problem of intermittent power provided by these resources. In addition, the grid reliability can be enhanced. In this paper, the underground heating system is explained. The unconventional oil resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are discussed and an electrical generation system for the heating process is designed. Hybrid solar/wind (HSE) is chosen for the design seeking a better efficiency. The required number of PV modules and wind turbines are optimized in the design based on the total cost and the coverage area.
