Abstract

This chapter delves into the key concepts and technologies that define modern smart grids, which combine digital communication, automation, and real-time control to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of electricity systems. It outlines essential components of smart grids, including advanced metering infrastructure, demand response programs, renewable energy integration, grid automation and control, energy storage solutions, and microgrids. Each of these elements plays a crucial role in optimizing grid operations, integrating renewable resources, and providing greater flexibility to meet changing energy demands. Through a comprehensive examination of these components, the chapter highlights how smart grids support the shift toward decentralized and resilient energy systems, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future. Additionally, it covers dispatch strategies that effectively manage resources, minimize costs, and ensure grid stability, even in the face of variability and growing energy demands.
