Similarity assessment of lunar highland simulant (LSS-ISAC-1) for lunar habitation materials and structures

Abstract

The development of lunar habitation materials is one of the promising techniques for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) in space. The ISRU-related research and interaction studies are being done with the lunar simulants, developed to represent the lunar soils. This paper evaluates the similarity assessment of a lunar highland simulant (LSS-ISAC-1) developed for futuristic moon colonization with highland soil, mare soil, and overall lunar soil material. The reliability of the LSS-ISAC-1 was encountered based on the comparison of the results of available highland simulants (NU-LHT-2M and NAO-1). Three distinct methods, which are predominantly dependent on oxides composition, namely deviation in oxide composition (R), error index (EI), and grade index (GI), were adopted for the similarity assessment. The results revealed that the LSS-ISAC-1 has a better similarity in oxide composition with all three types of lunar soils than that of NU-LHT-2M and NAO-1. Apart from oxides composition, the geomechanical properties of the LSS-ISAC-1 are also determined and compared with the chosen highland simulants.
