N2 - Tungsten based catalysts synthesized using both hydrothermal and impregnation methods for the metathesis of butenes were studied. Catalysts having tungsten oxide in the framework of mesoporous silica exhibited higher metathesis activity as compared to tungsten oxide impregnated catalysts. W03-MCM-41(30) and WOJ-SBA-15(30) catalysts showed comparable activity with the highest propylene yield of 39 and 37 mol%, respectively at 550°C. Dual-bed or mixed catalyst system comprising of metathesis and cracking catalysts provided the highest propylene yields for the self-metathesis of butenes as compared to catalyst configurations using either metathesis or cracking. Optimized operating conditions were able to maximize olefin yield while minimizing C5+ heavies. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 25th Annual Saudi-Japan Symposium on Catalysts in Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals 2015 (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia 12/7-8/2015).
