Abstract

Solid waste management planners in developing countries are mainly concerned with problems related to the safe and economic disposal of municipal solid waste. To help solve these problems, a cost-capacity relationship is developed which can be used to evaluate the economics of different waste management systems including direct hauling, hauling using a transfer station, and local as well as regional landfill disposal systems. The methodology presented in this Paper is applied to the tri-city area of Dhahran, Dammam and Al-Khobar in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. A detailed cost analysis for all possible hauling and disposal alternatives is carried out. The hauling and disposal cost of local versus regional disposal alternatives is also evaluated.
