Abstract
During the process of steel manufacture, a wide variety of by-products are produced, which in the earlier years except for by-product fuels, were considered waste products. This situation has undergone a dramatic change in the last decade in which the challenges of energy and waste management have been converted into profit making strategies improving the bottom line of the integrated steel plants. The paper discusses the challenges facing the Indian iron and steel plants and the efforts made at Tata Steel in meeting these challenges with the salutary effect on cost of steel by efficient management of all types of by-products and waste products.
