Abstract

Maintaining integrity of water supply system is the primary interest of water utilities, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders because of failure consequences related to safety, public health, and financial liabilities. It is quite challenging to develop an effective asset management framework for water supply system due to aging, inadequate design, aggressive environmental factors, and improper maintenance and renewal. In this chapter, a risk and life cycle cost based asset management framework is developed to guide the utility managers or decision-makers to select the best alternative available, which can reduce (control) risk of the aging water supply system at a minimal cost. The proposed decision support tool is integrated with the geographic information system of the water utility for effective decision-making and visualization. To demonstrate the application of proposed framework, water distribution network of Glenmore-Ellison Improvement District has been studied.
