Abstract
The agriculture supply chain is a complex network of activities involving numerous stakeholders, from farm to fork. This chapter explores the capacity of blockchain technology to enhance the efficiency and security of agricultural supply chains. Blockchain, with its distributed and unchangeable record system, provides a strong resolution to various issues encountered in conventional agricultural supply chains, including inefficiency, lack of transparency, fraud, and exorbitant expenses. The chapter begins with an overview of the current state of agricultural supply chains, highlighting key issues and inefficiencies. It then introduces blockchain technology, explaining its fundamental principles, including decentralization, immutability, and consensus mechanisms. The core of the chapter focuses on the integration of blockchain technology within agricultural supply chains, detailing how it can enhance traceability, improve transparency, and foster trust among stakeholders. We present case studies of successful blockchain implementations in agriculture, showcasing their real-world applications and benefits. These case studies cover various aspects of the supply chain, including provenance tracking, quality assurance, and payment systems. The chapter also explores how blockchain can facilitate better resource management and sustainability practices by providing accurate and real-time data. The article also addresses the obstacles and constraints associated with implementing blockchain technology in agricultural supply chains, including technological hurdles, scalability challenges, and regulatory considerations. The chapter concludes with future directions and potential advancements in blockchain technology that could further revolutionize the agriculture sector. After reading this chapter, readers will understand how blockchain technology can streamline, make transparent, and secure agricultural supply chains, leading to increased productivity and sustainability in the agriculture industry.
