Abstract

This paper presents the results of tests on the corrosion resistance of galvanized and chromated bars in cracked concrete and then exposed under load to accelerated laboratory cyclic wetting and drying tests or to a tidal zone. In both types of tests galvanized bars showed very good performance. Less than 10% of bar surface was affected by pitting corrosion after 2 years of accelerated exposure and 3 years of natural exposure. The pH of the concrete near the steel surface remained at 12.6 to 12.8. Very high chloride concentrations were observed in small cover depths of 10 to 20 mm which is unlikely to leave even the best protected steel uncorroded for very long. Cracking, cover and concrete quality appear to be major parameters influencing steel corrosion, but cover to steel is the most critical factor to preserve the electro-chemical stability of steel.
