Abstract
The reliability analysis of concrete structural members is considered and a relationship between the reliability and the factor of safety is established. The application of optimization techniques to the minimum cost design of concrete structures is discussed. A method of designing concrete structural members for minimum cost to obtain a specified reliability is presented. As simple examples, the reliability based optimum design of reinforced concrete beams and columns is considered in some detail. The cross-sectional dimensions of the structural member, the area of reinforcing steel and the strengths of concrete and steel are considered as random design parameters. The constrained optimization problem is solved by using the interior penalty function method. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the computational effectiveness of the analysis and design methods presented.
