Abstract

Owing to the increasing ecological awareness, development and consumption of the environmental friendly materials are highly essential in every field of science and technology. One of such materials is ionic liquids. Ionic liquids are associated with several advantageous properties including low melting point, low vapor pressure, low toxicity, high polarity and extremely high stability to thermal and chemical treatments. Because of their high solubility and excellent anticorrosion activity, ionic liquids are widely employed as corrosion inhibitors for metals and alloys in different electrolytic media. Presence review article features the collection of major recent (mainly 2015–2020) advancement on ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors. This article gives a brief outline about the property and application of ionic liquids. Basic information about corrosion, it adverse effect and mechanism of corrosion inhibition have also be described.
