Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on developing innovative materials and therapeutic strategies to improve wound healing and challenge the worldwide issue of antibiotic resistance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant attention due to their excellent properties, like high porosity, structural flexibility, and thermal stability. These materials offer valuable antibacterial properties and hold potential for wound photothermal therapy, making them excellent candidates for complex wound healing management. However, a key limitation of MOFs is their tendency to degrade quickly in hydrophilic environments, which hinders their prolonged effectiveness. Therefore, MOFs should be incorporated into dressing materials to surmount this challenge. The combination not only enhances the stability and distribution of MOFs but also controls the sustained release of bioactive agents while integrating antibacterial characteristics into the dressing system. Although various reviews have explored MOF-based dressing materials, zeolitic imidazolate framework ZiF-8 based dressing material needs to be explored for wound healing applications. The nanocomposites (ZiF-8) are known for their biocompatibility, potential antibacterial, and functional properties, making them excellent options for wound healing applications. This review aims to provide a state-of-the-art review article with the recent development of ZiF-8 incorporated dressing materials within 3–5 years wound dressings and fundamental characteristics of ZiF-8 and its wound dressing as an excellent option. Herein, we have discussed different wounds, wound healing mechanisms, ZiF-8 based dressing materials, fundamental biomedical properties of ZiF-8 for wound healing applications, limitations and future perspectives that have been concluded in this review.
