Abstract
In the barrel region of the CMS detector, the drift tube chambers (DT) provide muon tracking and triggering. As a consequence of the higher event rate expected during High-Luminosity LHC, the new CMS trigger requirements will exceed the present capabilities of the drift tube on-detector electronics. For reasons that encompass higher performance, chamber aging mitigation, and maintainability, the DT collaboration will replace legacy readout and trigger electronics during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), which is expected to last for four years, starting from 2026. The current on-detector electronics of DT superlayers for azimuthal angle ϕ measurements will be replaced by new boards called on-board-drift-tube for ϕ view (OBDT-ϕ) electronic module. This new electronics, which deploys 240 time to digital converters per board, obtains the LHC clock information directly from the back-end, provides several data streams at a rate of 10 Gbps, and offers a resolution of approximately 1 ns. The design, performance and qualification of this system will be presented.
