Abstract

In this paper, factors responsible for poor adhesion of polysulfide sealants to aged polyurethane will be defined. We shall describe the monitoring of concentration changes in NCO groups during curing of polyurethane coatings using transmission and surface reflectance infrared spectroscopy. We have also developed a hand-pull test on small specimens for rapid adhesion screening. It is hoped that this method will find application in formulation of newer aircraft polysulfide sealants. Polyurethane reaction with polysulfide and the mechanism of adhesion have also been treated.
