Abstract
The chapter provides an account of rare-earth element-based conversion coatings for magnesium and its alloys. Representative works on different rare-earth-based coatings including cerium, lanthanum, yttrium, samarium, neodymium, gadolinium and praseodymium are discussed, emphasizing the latest developments on composite conversion coatings. Morphology, structure and composition of rare-earth conversion coatings, their mechanism of formation and the effect of co-additives and post-treatments are presented.
