Abstract
A systematic study has been carried out to determine the performance improvement in pulse height of a 250 mm diameter NE213 scintillator due to the use of a lightguide (LG). In this study the energy resolution, time resolution, and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) properties of the scintillator were measured with and without the LG. The energy resolution was measured using γ-γ coincidence technique while its time resolution was measured using time- correlated γ-rays from 60Co source. PSD tests of the scintillator were carried out using a 241Am-Be neutron source. After incorporating the LG, an improvement of up to of 54% and 28% was observed in the detector energy and time resolution respectively. The PSD characteristic did show a slight degradation due to the LG. The measured energy and time resolution of the detector with the LG is in agreement with published data.
