Abstract

AN EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL PROGRAMME TO EXPLORE POTENTIAL MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF DRAG REDUCING AGENTS (DRA) HAS BEEN UNDERWAY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON FOR ABOUT FIVE YEARS.THIS PAPER REVIEWS PROGRESS TO DATE, COVERING THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: (A) DRAG REDUCTION IN PULSED FLOW OF BLOOD, (B) EFFECT OF DRA ON TURBULENT PERIODICITY IN BLOOD FOR FLOWS THROUGH PARTIALLY OCCLUDED AND UNOCCLUDED TUBES, BOTH IN VIVO AND IN VITRO, (C) EFFECTS OF DRA ON HEMOLYSIS RATES DURING MECHANICAL PUMPING OF BLOOD, (D) EFFECTS OF DRA ON ATHEROGENESIS.CURRENT RESULTS WILL BE SUMMARISED AND AREAS OF ANTICIPATED BIOMEDICAL IMPORTANCE WILL BE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED.
