Abstract
Neonatal polycythemia defined as a venous hematocrit greater than 65% is the primary cause of hyperviscosity in newborn infants. Polycythemia and hyperviscosity may have lasting effects in brain, heart, kidney and intestine and approximately 40% of babies may have long term neurological sequalae.
