Abstract
The chapter explores the significant potential of EC technology in enhancing the energy efficiency of buildings through retrofitting. EC materials offer a dynamic solution for controlling light and heat transmission in buildings, thereby reducing reliance on artificial lighting and HVAC systems. This chapter provides an in-depth overview of the various forms of EC materials, including their working mechanisms, types, and applications. It examines the published research supporting the benefits of using EC materials in building retrofitting, highlighting their ability to improve energy efficiency, visual comfort, and overall environmental sustainability. Despite the numerous advantages of EC materials, several challenges remain, including high initial costs, integration with smart building systems, and long-term durability. However, ongoing research and development efforts are addressing these challenges, aiming to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of EC technology.
