Abstract
The Pacific HVDC Intertie System in the western United States which was commissioned in 1970 to transmit a maximum of 1440 Mw in either direction at 800 kv ( plus or minus 400 kv) line-to-line, is discussed. One of the many circuit protections incorporated into the versatile control system was the dc line protection. This paper concerns itself with the philosophy, procedure and testing of this protection followed by examples from operating experience.
