Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction to materials and nanomaterials (NMs); it discusses the surface and interface science of them as well. This chapter introduces the fundamental information of the components of materials, and how they are designed from an atomic point of view. Insights into hybrid materials are provided in the chapter as well. Additionally, definitions for different terms including elements, matter, materials, and interactions are quoted and contrasted with popular conceptualizations of advanced technology. The chapter also discusses the type of chemical and general reaction conditions involved in surface and interface science.
