Optimized carbon nanofibres for composites toughening

Abstract

Carbon nanofibres with diameters 150-450 nm were fabricated from polyacrylonitrile via electrospinning and heat treatments. Specially designed MEMS tools were employed to determine the mechanical strength of the polymer precursors and the individual carbon nanofibres. The resulting nanofibres had a small distribution of flaws and the tensile strength of vapour grown carbon nanofibres.
