Abstract

The influence of free stream direction on mixed (natural and forced) convection heat transfer from a circular cylinder was investigated. The cylinder, which had an isothermal surface, was placed with its axis horizontal. The direction of the incoming flow, which was always normal to the cylinder axis, varied from vertically upward (parallel flow) to vertically downward (contra flow). The investigation was based on the time integration of the unsteady, two-dimensional equations of motion and energy.
