Abstract

One-dimensional Photonic Crystal (PhC) resonators have recently emerged as a solution for building tags in the mm-wave and terahertz bands. In the reflection mode, PhC resonator tags are coded by one or multiple notches in the frequency spectrum where the presence or absence of a notch represents bit 1 or 0. Unlike the coding of chipless Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags, PhC resonator tags produce additional physical constraints that affect the coding capacity. This paper presents a means of coding by dividing the operational bandwidth to N number of channels taking into consideration both the tag physical constraints and constraints on mapping the code notches on the defined channels. An illustrative example based on the coding method is also discussed to show the expected influence of such constraints on detection performance.
