Abstract
This paper describes new developed processes for synthesis of selective olefins from methanol which can replace the naphtha cracking process. General remarks on growing prices of naphthas are followed by a review of recently developed processes aimed at the conversion of methanol to olefins (MTO) produced from coal. The discussion is presented under headings - present status of MTO; the catalysts; operation data; application to commercial plants; speculative economics.
