Abstract

The effect of second- and third-order nonlinearities on transverse shear waves in an elastic medium is examined. It is found that waveform distortion and shock development occur on a length scale which is an order of magnitude greater than for longitudinal waves. Explicit solutions for modulated traveling waves are obtained.
