Abstract

It is well accepted that one of the most important routes for petrochemical production takes places place via the hydrogen molecule (H2) or the synthesis gas mixture of H2/CO/CO2 which is produced from methane or other petroleum sources. The substitution of these fossil derived gas mixtures with non-fossil ones is the main scope of this paper. Firstly, the work presented centers on the development of non-fossil hydrogen produced from water using renewable sources of energy; in particular solar energy. Next non-conventional sources of carbon dioxide are exploited and cited and chemical reactions are proposed for the production of carbon monoxide. Many important precursors of petrochemicals are synthesized accordingly using this novel approach.
