Abstract
Emission from the lowest quintet state of CO is observed in low power glow discharge. Intersystem crossing from the C1Σ+(ν= 1) state to the a″5Π state makes transition from the a″5Π state to lower lying states possible. The term values for the three lower vibrational levels of the a″5Π state are found to be, ν(0)=84264cm-1, ν(1)=84264cm-1 and ν(2)=84264cm-1 above the ground level. The fundamental vibrational frequency of the a″5Π state is found to be ωe=907. 18±6cm-1. Analysis of the relaxation pathways of excited CO molecules via the a″5Π state is carried out and transition lines assigned.
